Last week I finished drawing a flower I saw while visiting some of my friends in California. I thought it was one of the weirdest looking flowers I've ever seen. Weirdly beautiful.
And if I'm going to be honest, I didn't even know the name of it until I decided to finally sit down and draw it. In fact, I didn't even know really where to begin to find out what it was called. Until I thought about the fact that there's an app for pretty much everything these days. And sure enough, I found an app called PlantSnap. While in the app, you can snap a picture of the plant in question. And it will identify it for you. How awesome is that?
Once I posted my completed drawing of the Bird of Paradise, my friend Jessica comfirmed I'm not the only one that thinks these are a strange looking plant. Her words, "These flowers always creeped me out because they seemed like the kind of sci-fi botanical that would shoot a poison dart into your neck as you passed." Thanks for the validation Jessica.
In celebration of my newfound love of the Bird of Paradise, I've made a free downloadable color sheet. To download, click on the linked image below and enjoy!
